Pre-Conference Workshop: Marketing the Brand You
  • Melissa Richards, Assistant Vice President for Marketing & Publications, Virginia Tech
  • Sara Bohn, Senior Financial Planner, JSW Financial
  • Let's face it: America is a brand-driven society. And when it comes to people, we are all free agents, independent brands seeking loyalty. Marketing "you" as a brand is not just about finding a new job. Even if you are not currently in the job market, you may find yourself there again some day. Or you may simply reach a stage of life where you desire to reinvent yourself. So what can you do today to set yourself apart tomorrow? Through dialogue and interactive exercises in this workshop, we'll explore:
    • How your reputation is your brand
    • That a job title does not define you
    • Establishing your brand promise using online media such as blogs, LinkedIn, and Twitter
    • What body language and interpersonal communications say about you
    • Networking and traditional tactics to build a loyalty base among your colleagues, supervisors, and executives
    • Why you should update your resume at least once a year rather than waiting until you are in the job market
We'll also take a deep dive into the topic of mentors and sponsors. Having a mentor or sponsor or both is one of the most impactful ways that you can springboard your career to the next level. It is imperative to learn the key factors when considering, selecting, and approaching potential mentors and sponsors, as well as how to leverage those relationships in a way that can be beneficial to you both professionally and personally. Participants will walk away with an understanding of informal and formal approaches, the roles that mentors and mentees play, and how to create a mentoring plan.
